Christian Dior's name is considered by many as the most recognized name in Fashion. Christian Dior was born in 1905 in the small town of Granville in Normandy, France. Dior spent some time as an artist and a gallery launched in 1928 with generous funding by his father.
Hard times were just around the corner though. The Great Depression led to the collapse of the family business, forcing them to sell virtually everything they owned. Dior went to live with a friend and soon started directing his attention to the fashion industry.
After being discharged from military service in 1940, returned to Paris in 1941 and secured employment with the House of Fashion by Lucien Lelong.
In 1946, Marcel Boussac, the richest man in France at the time, a significant financial support Dior to launch his own Fashion House. First line of clothes by Dior, launched in 1947, was a runaway success, winning for the designer, both in Europe and the U.S. distant.
Not surprisingly, in 1949, Dior established a presence in New York and soon expanded to London again in 1952. The global expansion in general, followed shortly later.
In 1948 Dior launched a line of perfume under the name Christian Dior Perfumes Ltd. While in 1950 the decision to expand the brand in accessories fashionable hats, ties and handbags was not popular in the French Chamber of Couture, the movement remains a cornerstone aa large part of current success of the Company.
Dior was preparing for retirement when a heart attack killed him in 1957.
In the chaos that followed, the relatively small Yves Saint Laurent experience was promoted to the position of chief designer of the Company. Saint Laurent had mixed success before military service forced him to leave Dior. His successor, Marc Bohan, who remain with the company until 1989. Bohan is credited in many circles to the rescue of the Dior brand.
Boussac group, which was still under the financial control of the Dior fashion Fouse, filed for bankruptcy since 1984. Dior was bought by an investor group led by Bernard Arnault. Arnault took an active part in the direction of Dior would take over the coming decades.
In 2001, the company decided to enter the men's fashion market, and his first talent show directed by Yves Saint Laurent, former designer Hedi Slimane was a great success! Despite some ups and downs recent years, Dior is still regarded as one of the most popular and innovative fashion houses in the world.
